German Refugee and Migration Policies: Interactive Workshops

The workshops that were conducted in the course of this project focused on the phenomenon migration and the problems and conflicts resulting from the current migration policies. In order to understand the complexity of the problem the participating adolescents intensively dealt with the subject and entered into a dialogue with persons who are in charge in the fields of administration and politics. To begin with nine one-day workshop was conducted on a local level. These took place in three different regions of Germany (North-East, North-West and South). Each time 30 participants conducted a simulation game. At the end of the workshop ideas for reforms with regards to migration politics were gathered. These ideas were discussed with persons in charge of local administration and/or politics. In a next step three workshops on the regional level took place. For each region the 30 participants of the regional workshops were recruited from the local workshops of the respective region. The participants partook in another simulation game. Moreover, the most supported ideas for reforms were presented to and discussed with politicians from the regional level in order for the participants to understand what it takes to implement their ideas. The results from the regional workshops are, in a final step, presented on the federal level. In cooperation with the German Federal Parliament an exhibition of the acquired suggestions were organised. Moreover, a two-day event took place. Their ideas regarding reforms in the field of migration politics were discussed with experts. Subsequently, workshops took place during which the implementation of the acquired ideas was discussed together with politicians.

Target Group

The project was designed for politically active youngsters, in between 16 and 30 years old, who are interested in actively discussing questions with regards to migration.

Project Goals

This structured dialogue aimed to support the debate about European migration politics. Along the lines of the bottom-up approach measures to deal with problems that have been identified on a local level were developed. The participants dealt extensively with the field of migration and developed a better understanding of it. Moreover, they had the chance to develop their own ideas for problem solving and discuss their thoughts with policy makers. In the process the potential for innovation of the participants is used and they have the possibility to inject their ideas into the political processes.
