Maripago - Initatives against GBV

The simulation game focuses on combatting and raising awareness on gender-based violence through a solution-oriented approach. It allows the participants to explore root causes and discuss concrete activities to contribute to a prevention of GBV on a community level. The simulation specifically addresses the topics of sexual harassment (offline and online) as well as domestic violence.

Scenario and Procedure

The simulation is set in the fictional country of Maripago. After Karina Delgado, a citizen of this country shared a story on social media about her experience as a victim of sexual harassment, numerous girls and women came forward with their own stories on a website that she had created with the help of her friends. In light of the nation-wide debate the Mayor of Kalaga, a city in the south of Maripago, is conducting a meeting to discuss and come up with a strategic plan for combating and preventing GBV. In a first round the community representative agree on the most relevant root causes and based on their analysis will develop concrete strategies for action.

Objectives

The goal of this simulation game is to enhance the understanding of the complexity behind the existence of gender-based violence and to find effective solutions that contribute to its prevention. Participants get the chance to discuss its manifold root causes and to learn about innovative ideas on how to tackle them. Through their participation they furthermore can explore different roles, understand conflicting perspectives and establish a constructive dialogue to develop common solutions.
