Combatting Censorship in Turkey

The project "Combatting Censorship and Discrimination against Journalists with Intersecting Backgrounds in Turkey" has kicked-off in Istanbul, marking the official launch of this significant initiative.

The project’s specific focus is on countering censorship and discrimination faced by journalists with intersecting and vulnerable backgrounds. By supporting CSOs through networking, monitoring, and advocacy, the initiative addresses all priorities of the call for proposals, contributing to a more resilient, inclusive, and democratic society in Turkey.

With a duration of 36 months, the project aims to promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of journalists in Turkey by empowering civil society organizations (CSOs) to improve democratic processes. The discussions addressed the topic of ensuring that journalists, particularly those from minority groups or with intersecting identities, can operate in an environment free from discrimination and censorship. The project also emphasizes gender equality, transparency, and accountability throughout its implementation.

The project is funded by the European Union and is a collaborative effort between CRISP - Crisis Simulation for Peace e.V. and its consortium partners: Basın Konseyi (Press Council), Tüm İletişim ve Medya Federasyonu (TIMEF), and Politik Araştırmalar Derneği (PAD).

Project Goals 

To support the advancement and safeguarding of human rights and fundamental freedoms of journalists for advancing democratic and civil space in Türkiye, with a particular emphasis on those with intersecting backgrounds. 
Enhancing the capacity of CSOs to counteract censorship and discrimination against journalists, thus fostering a more inclusive and democratic media environment and a more democratic country.

Target Group(s)
  • Civil society organizations that focus on rights-based journalism, media, and communications.
  • Professional/unemployed journalists and young university students/graduates at journalism, communications, and media departments of Turkish universities.
Planned Outcomes/Achievements 
  • Increased capacity of the CSOs for combatting discrimination and censorship targeting journalists 
  • Increased financial and networking capacity of CSOs to counter censorship and discrimination against journalists. 
  • Strengthening the monitoring mechanism for the violations of freedom of speech, expression, and discrimination targeting journalists with intersecting backgrounds. 
  • Civil advocacy initiatives targeting policy makers and media organizations.
