Strengthening Social Cohesion in Eastern Chad: CRISP Completes Phase One of the RECOS Project

CRISP successfully wraps up the first phase of the RECOS project in Eastern Chad, with a validation workshop and multi-actor discussions driving progress toward lasting peace and resilience for refugees, returnees, and host communities.

CRISP has successfully completed Phase One of the Conflict analysis for the RECOS project in Eastern Chad, marking a major step in strengthening social cohesion in a region deeply affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The validation workshop held on July 29, 2025, provided an opportunity for key stakeholders to review and approve the findings, conducted in a hybrid format with participants including local authorities, national organizations, and community leaders.

Following the successful workshop, CRISP participated in a multi-actor workshop on September 17, 2025, which brought together representatives from the European Commission, UNDP, and other regional actors involved in the project. This workshop further emphasized the commitment to building lasting peace and resilience among host, refugee, and returnee communities in Eastern Chad.

This collaboration aims to address the challenges faced by communities in Ouaddaï Province, where tensions over resources and limited infrastructure have escalated between refugees, returnees, and host communities. Phase One, which took place over just three weeks, focused on conducting a comprehensive conflict dynamics analysis. This analysis identified key sources of tension, including land disputes, resource competition, and gender-based violence, and highlighted existing mechanisms for conflict management.

The conflict analysis will guide the next steps of the RECOS project, ensuring that future interventions are conflict-sensitive and responsive to the evolving dynamics in the region. By engaging local communities, including women and youth, the project aims to foster peaceful coexistence and build resilience, ultimately strengthening social cohesion in the face of ongoing challenges.
