The pre-conference of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024

The official pre-conference of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 "Diaspora and the Global Ukrainian Community - Strong Partners in the Recovery of Ukraine" brought together guests from over 120 organizations in Berlin on April 19th and 20th.

The recovery of Ukraine is taking place now and at the same time it is extremely important to support Ukraine in its resistance against the Russian war with all necessary means.

State and non-state actors from Germany, Ukraine, the global Ukrainian community in Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Austria, Slovakia, Spain and other countries discussed common tasks and opportunities to strengthen sustainable cooperation for the restoration of Ukraine. The potential of the global Ukrainian community in recovery was underlined by impressive examples of best practice.

Cross-sectoral networking of representatives from German business, civil society and governmental organizations as well as the expansion of the global Ukrainian community network were the focus of the pre-URC event.

The results of the focus groups will be included in the URC Policy Note. The following topics were discussed:

  • Recovery in the context of EU integration
  • Community-led recovery
  • Human potential and education for recovery
  • Youth in recovery
  • Advocacy and communication
  • Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Diplomacy
  • Attracting investment and working with SMEs for restoration.

In addition, the necessity to refrain from using the term "human capital" in favor of "human potential" was emphasized several times during the conference, as it aligns with a broader understanding of human development and well-being, emphasizing the needs of individuals beyond mere economic considerations.

The pre-conference in Berlin served as an important milestone towards the main conference in June 2024, highlighting existing initiatives and identifying new opportunities for engagement and collaboration. The outcomes and recommendations of this event will provide valuable input to the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference and help develop targeted strategies for recovery.

Our special thanks go to all guests for their active participation and expertise. Especially those who traveled all the way from Ukraine.
Many thanks for the financial and content-related support of the event go to the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine.
