Young Cultural Diplomacy in Ukraine

What happens when young Ukrainians step into the shoes of EU leaders? A groundbreaking cultural diplomacy workshop brought together 20 participants to simulate high-stakes European security decisions, proving that the next generation has courageous ideas for navigating our complex geopolitical landscape.

From May 9-11, 2024, CRISP organized workshops in the Ivano-Frankivsk region together with STAN, bringing together young cultural diplomats from across Ukraine. The ambitious project aimed to illustrate the complex effects of the Russian war against Ukraine on Europe and the world.

The centrepiece of the event was the simulation game “EU Security. Outlook 2025” that recreated a summit of the Council of the European Union. Participants took on the roles of EU heads of state and government and developed strategic approaches for EU security policy in the face of current threats. This interactive method enabled the young diplomats to experience firsthand the multifaceted challenges of dealing with autocratic regimes and to become familiar with the institutions and tools of the EU.
In addition to the simulation, democratic dialogue and the development of their own cultural diplomatic projects were the focus. This practical component enabled participants to translate their theoretical insights into concrete approaches for action. CRISP is particularly excited about the further development of these individual projects.
The initiative highlights the growing importance of cultural diplomacy as an instrument of international understanding. Especially in times of crisis, young people from civil society can build important bridges and contribute to solving complex geopolitical challenges.
