On November 21, 18 diplomats participated in the simulation "Nisia" on the final day of their three-week training program organized by the German Federal Foreign Office.
In the fictional island state of Nisia, they assumed roles as government representatives, NGO members, UN delegates, civil society advocates, fishery and tourism industry stakeholders, and concerned citizens. The negotiations centered on topics such as climate change, the climate crisis, and climate-induced migration. Issues like relocation and coastal protection were discussed in connection with economic development, with diverse perspectives brought together and negotiated through open or secret discussions and conference formats.
While some agreements were reached, many points remained contentious. The concluding reflection highlighted the relevance of the topic, its proximity to real-world challenges, and potential starting points for future actions and further discussions.
